The competition was played as Stable ford system. There were 6 flights with a total of 23 players. One veteran Baldev Singh Sandhu dropped out.
A little twist was added to the normal mundane competition. 8th hole was made as the straightest hole instead of the normal longest drive. This gave an opportunity to quite a number of players with a low to medium range drives. Sure enough, Dr Ubhi proved that he can hit a straight drive - equally well as a long drive. Well done Doc!
8th hole was named as the Las Vegas hole in addition to the normal NTP. Interestingly all took the punt. Sorry there were no winners for this. I am sure a lot of enthusiasm was created early in the morning. We will continue to add similar interesting features to the game.
Overall the competition was won by the ever resilient David Gyi. I was on his flight and man... he is bloody good. Young Jeevan Singh was not very far off from the leader - a score of 36. Well done Jeevan - we have to scrutinise your handicap!!
Quite a number of seniors participated today and without a doubt the doctor (Dr Ubhi) must have taken some vitamins - winning with a total score 33. This was followed by myself managing a score of 31. Thanks David and Raj for the coaching, my drives are starting to straighten up a fraction. It pays to play with good players!
As usual all four par 3s were challenged very well for NTP. David Gyi took the honours on the first par 3 followed by myself on hole 8 and 12. Thanks David - I can hold the stick straight now! One man never goes home without a trophy and yes our friend Harry won the 18th hole.
The 19th hole - I apologise for the distance - but I am sure all liked the spicy Persian delights - served by friendly waitress. I Hope all had a good time and the April tournament is at Morack Golf Club. I believe it is sponsored by Ashley Kumar (subject to confirmation).
NB: I apologise for not bringing the prizes today. I will ensure all winners are presented with their precious trophies - at next meeting.
Kind regards,
B Khosa (A/g captain)

The April comp was held at Morack Golf Club, and was proudly sponsored by Mr. Ashley Kumar of Interfair (Aust) P/L. There were 5 flights and stroke play was the format. Morack is not an easy course - although it seems like a backyard for players like Keat Lim - managing one NTP and yes, the longest drive as well. Well done Keat.
Pritam Ubhi, won the comp beating our regular leader - David Gyi. Well done Pritam and hope to see you play in future comps. Again Dr Ubhi won the Masters group. Ricky Gill was rewarded very well for using his driver on hole 10 to gain the NTP. Well done Ricky.
The 19th hole was celebrated at Puran Chaal’s residence. I personally thank Puran for doing a great job, especially when his lovely partner was not there to help in cooking. Once again - Puran thank you for managing the lunch and prize presentation.
Talking about prizes - we are very grateful to Ashley Kumar for donating the prizes. Unfortunately Ash was not able to attend and give away the prizes. Ashley also has extended his generosity by giving VSAGC discount - if we order the future trophies through him.
Most of the committee members were not present at the 19th hole - due to other commitments. With the help of our members Puran managed it well. I like to thank all who attended the comp and later helped in the BBQ.
The May comp will be our 1st Major comp for the year being the Vesakhi Challenge, which will be proudly sponsored by the Ubhi family, and will be played as stable ford system. Please turn and support the Vesakhi Cup tournament.
Kind Regards,
Balwant Khosa (A/g captain)

The June 2010 Competition unfortunately clashed with another social golf club, MSA, where we have several joint members. Our President, Puran Chaal has communicated our competition dates for next year to MSA, and hopefully there won't be a similar clash then.
Initially, very few players registered for this comp - but in spite of the wet weather we ended up with 15 brave golfers - come what may they were ready to go. At Glen Waverly GC - for some reasons they is always a bit of delay. Maybe the club is overbooking the flights and of course the weather didn’t help.
Getting down to the actual game it looks like there was a fierce competition between some old rivals - Raj Chaal (86), David Gyi (85) and coming back after a long break - Bajan Sangah (85). The low handicapped stars found it hard to win - Bajan took the 1st prize with a net score of 69 (HC 17). Well done Bajan - welcome back after a long break, and we hope to see you soon for more excellent competition. Our ex-Capitano - Ranjeet Singh Bhatt did equally well also netting 69 (HC 22), but lost out on a count-back.
Raj Chaal did focus on this game very well hence winning the longest Drive and pocketed 2 NTPs as well. It is about time Raj wins the tournament. Both Surjan and David shared the other 2 NTPs. I am proud that our new upcoming Senior took the honours by winning the Masters award - net 86 (HC 22). Well done Siva.
The June competition was also the Qualifying for the 2010 Captain's Shield Matchplay competition. We are very grateful for the ongoing generous sponsorship of this Matchplay competition by none other than our very own ex-Capitano, Mr Ranjeet Singh Bhatt. The pairings for the quarter-finals for the Matchplay competition during the July competition (in order of qualifying) is as follows -
Match 1: Ranjeet Bhatt (1, h22) vs Ricky Gill (8, h28)
Match 2: Raj Chaal (2, h13) vs Siva Selvam (7, h22)
Match 3: David Gyi (3, h11) vs Surjan Singh (6, h18)
Match 4: Harry Sandhu (4, h18) vs Parvinder Gill (5, h22)
These are some excellent mouth-watering pairings. Good luck to all participants.
The 19th hole was celebrated at the The Tandoori Junction. I believe the food was good and Raj Chaal was appointed by Royal Charter to be the stand-in Captain for the day due to the absence of both the Captain and the Vice-Captain, and he performed brilliantly. Much appreciated Raj.
Our secretary - Ranjeet Chaal is on a tour of duty in Malaysia and will be back - probably next week.
Gentlemen - start of July 2010 we are reintroducing the B-Grade competition for our higher handicappers, after a break last year and the first half of this year. Hence, there will be no Masters section. We are also grouping our players in line with individual handicaps. This, hopefully will create robust competition between the higher handicappers, and a chance to win a deserved prize. The NTPs will also be reduced to 2. Basically the format will look like this:-
- A Grade 0 - 23 (win & runners-up)
- B Grade 24 - 28 (win & runners-up)
- Longest / Straight Drive
- NTP X 2 (shortest holes)
In order to have a recognised handicap, I am keeping the cards and scores and hopefully by the end of the year we will be able to calculate the HC - in accordance with new Australian handicap system.
NB
Please note that there is a slight correction to the May Comp results.
Have a look at the May 2010 results. Being a Major Comp, an extra 2 trophies were available to be won. I regret any unintended misunderstandings as a result of the clarification of results.
Our next competition (July) is at Albert Park Golf Club on 18 July. It is a very interesting course adjacent to the Grand Prix circuit. Please come along and support your club, improve your golf and enjoy some club camaraderie. Be-lae! Be-lae!
Kind regards
Balwant (VSAGC Capt)

The response for July 2010 comp was terrific, in spite of the gloomy and cold morning. There were 23 participants who made best use of the weather conditions and enjoyed their game. Only one player - Gurbachan Singh was unable to play.
The tournament was divided into 2 sections - i.e. match play challenge consisting of 8 players - playing for the Captain’s Shield (sponsored by Ranjeet Singh), while the remainder participated in the normal competition.
For the match play - it was a tough battle between some of the high and low handicappers. Our sole B-Grade qualifier, Ricky Gill gave a good fight to Ranjeet Singh, but in the end the experienced Ranjeet came through and won his match.
The closest match was between our defending champion, Harry (DHS) Dhillon and Parvinder Gill, which was a nail biting contest decided by the last putt on the 18th hole.
The following players will fight it out at the semi-final:
The Captain’s Shield Matchplay Challenge is a fantastic sponsored initiative by our ex-Captain, Ranjeet Singh. I hear a lot of positive feedback from players who have experienced the thrill of playing under pressure every hole. This playing under pressure helps to improve our individual games and temperament for the normal competitions. The qualifying for the Matchplay Challenge in held every year in June, and I would encourage everyone to try to qualify next year.
Keat Lim donated 2 very useful prizes - consisting of 2 balls, a counter and distance measuring device. A raffle draw was held on the day, and these were won by Puran Chaal and Avtar Padda. Thank you very much for your generosity Keat.
The 19th hole was celebrated in the pub at the Golf Club itself. I’d like to thank Raj Chaal for organising the lunch - at very short notice. There were chips and focaccia, and plenty of amber liquid for everyone to enjoy.
Players have expressed interest in playing with different players or groups every month. I will try to arrange flights with more mix and match, and I would welcome any suggestions from members.
Please remember that the committee members are only volunteers, who are equally busy and occupied like everyone else. There is quite a bit of preparatory work required prior to every monthly competition.
Can I please request members (at least 2) to arrive a little earlier than advertised during every monthly competition, and volunteer to manage the collection of monies and scoring cards handout (at the start), and scoring reviews (during the 19th hole presentations).
It just takes a little time, but is necessary for members’ benefit. This would greatly assist in providing support and flexibility to the committee members.
The August tournament will be held at Morack Golf Club.
Kind regards,
Balwant Khosa,

| Raj Chaal (13) def David Gyi (12) - 3 and 2 |
The VSAGC August 2010 monthly competition was supposed to be bright and sunny - but being Melbourne’s unpredictable weather - there was hardly any sunshine. The ground was still very soggy and made it hard for some players to perform to their maximum - as the ball frequently being buried in the ground - no run at all!
Again the tournament was divided into 2 sections - i.e. match play semi-finals - consisting of 4 players playing for the Captain’s Shield Match Play Trophy (proudly sponsored by Ranjeet S Bhatt) and the rest of the field participated in the normal monthly stroke play competition.
The match play competition was a hard fought contest all day for both semi-finals. Harry Dhillon (Captain’s Shield Match Play defending Champion) and Ranjeet Singh’s game was a spirited arm-wrestle, neck-to-neck, no quarter given or asked, teeth ground in the dust contest all day. Fittingly, the match finished all square at the end of the 18 holes. As both Harry and Ranjeet were completely buggered, they agreed for the match to be decided by a coin toss after walking off the 18th green. Well played to both players.
Raj Chaal and David Gyi’s game was played out quite differently. As is the norm with Raj, he slipped early to be 4 down after 6 holes and looking down the barrel. David however was his usual tough competitive self, including nearly holing out for eagle (6 inches) at the Par 4 6th. From the 7th hole on, the match took a complete u-turn, with Raj picking up a VB stubbie, and his game, to hit 8 pars (including 5 in a row on the back 9), and the match was over at the 16th. “It was what had to be done to beat a tough and respected competitor like David”, quoted Raj later on. Well done to both players as well.
The Captain’s Shield Match Play Trophy Final will be contested between Raj Chaal (13) and Ranjeet Singh (22). Good luck to both players. It promises to be a riveting contest between the wily and experienced Ranjeet, and the completely unpredictable Raj! As Raj always says, “It will be entertaining”.
Balbir Maan has won the A Medal twice in a row now, and so did Keat Lim coming a very close second for the second time. Let us see if these 2 players can repeat the results in September! Nearly half the field were competing for the B Medal and it gave more players with opportunities to win trophies as well. Harbhajan Sandhu won the B Medal followed by Kishen Singh, defeating Chanchal Singh on count back.
A warm welcome back to both Harbhajan and Kishen after a long absence, as well as young Francis Khoo. We hope to see all of you back again next month.
The longest drive was won by Sadha Sidhu - thanks to Keat Lim’s new ‘super’ driver! Not many players had much luck in taking on the NTPs. Only Keat and I managed one each. The wind and ground conditions were not very favourable. Better luck next time.
The 19th hole was celebrated at the Persian Flavours and once again the players were extremely happy as everyone had plenty to eat. The food was delicious.
Please note: I am suggesting that we should have a special prize for a “HOLE IN ONE”. One of these days someone is going to pop the ball in the hole. I am suggesting the prize should be at least $100.00 - enough to shout drinks for the celebration. Anyone with similar suggestions, please write to the Secretary at vsagolf@yahoo.com.au
The next monthly comp will be at Tirhatuan Links Golf Course, Stud Road, Rowville.
Kind regards,
Balwant Khosa (Captain, VSAGC)

CAPTAIN'S SHEILD MATCH PLAY FINAL RESULT:
| Raj Chaal (hcp 13) def Ranjeet Singh Bhatt (hcp 22) - 4 and 3 |
The Football finals in Melbourne reduced the number of participants for the August Comp. Some of the regulars attendees were still recovering on Sunday morning from the shock draw bet Collingwood and Saints! Our regular ‘daru-wala’ - sardar Puran Chaal was called upon to perform some important duties, and was ubale to participate. The boys did miss Puran’s cold beers!
There were 5 flights in total, comprising of the regular tournament and the Captain’s Shield Matchplay Final.
The weather could not have been better - it was a perfect day for golf. The fairway was a bit rough, and a cut of the grass would have helped the players. In all, the conditions were reasonable.
The golf club welcomed back Rashpal Chaggar after an extended long absence. Rashpal is also a generous sponsor of the Diwali Cup Competition to be played in November.
Rashpal - although coming back after a long time - certainly did not lose his skills and easily won the competition. Well done Rashpal. More interestingly Keat Lim won the Longest Drive. The new driver is certainly paying dividends. He beat Rashpal by nearly 30 meters! That was a good drive, and well done Keat.
The matchplay final was battled out between the experienced Ranjeet Singh Bhatt and the not so young anymore Raj Chaal. The match was played in good spirits all day. Raj had his customary slow start, and Ranjeet being inexplicably generous to not capitalise on some good opportunities to take an early lead. There was also some basic skill errors displayed by both players early on, which was probably due to the natural tension reflective of the occasion. It was at the 8th hole that Raj pulled away slighly to take a 2 hole lead, and he was able to increase his lead to 3 holes to take a good buffer into the back 9. Raj was eventually better able control his emotions to make less errors, which ultimately proved to be the decisive factor. The match was decided at the 15th, with Raj winning 4 and 3.
Congratulations to both players, and a good match played. Ranjeet was happy to make the final for the first time, and Raj was later heard to say that "The experience gained by Ranjeet would definitely stand him in good stead for next year's event". And that is true for all of our members, that we should all strive to be better players through the experience that we gain by playing this game that we love.
We missed our regular champ, David Gyi. Some of the members who lived near the Kingston Links Driving Range in Rowville, commented that David was seen working on a few aspects of his game, in preparation for next year's matchplay event. David could be seen through the glass windows at the adjacent Stamford Hotel, where some of our members frequent for an in-depth analysis of their game, as part of their weekly preparation for golf.
The competition was played as per the Stableford scoring system. It has been suggested that we should stick to strokeplay in future - as many members are still unable to understand scoring as per the Stableford system. This then adds to the work of the match committee to fill in the points at the end of the competition. Please provide your input to me via our Secretary, on what can be done to assist our members in this area.
There was also some young blood playing in the group as well (only 17) and he did very well - coming second in ‘B’ group and also taking 2 out of the 4 NTP holes. Well done Jagbhajan Sandhu. We also wish you luck in your VCE exams. Jag is already a good golfer, and with some good coaching / practice will definitely become a very fine player indeed.
The NTPs were not that difficult, but still not many of us managed to land one on the greens (apart from Jag of course). Keat did have one on, but not near enough for a win.
With the reintroduction of the 'B-Grade' competition, I see that there is much more keen interest and competition among our higher handicappers. It was good to see Ranjeet Chaal winning the B grade with young Jagbhajan Sandhu finishing a close runner-up.
The 19th hole was celebrated at the club itself. Players enjoyed hamburgers and chips. It was not as good as a restaurant, but at the last moment I had no choice. Still the boys enjoyed the day and the food.
It was also pleasing to note that there there was excellent golfing courtesy displayed thoroughout the day by our members. Well done, and let's keep it up.
The next competition is at Cape Schanck Resort on the spectacular Mornington Peninsula, and is proudly sponsored by MPA Accountants. It is also our annual Bus trip outside the Melbourne Metropolitan area, and the cost of the bus is covered by our club as usual. All members are encouraged to register their interest in this annual event, but please be quick as this is a very popular event based on previous years' experience. Please keep a lookout on the VSAGC web site www.vsagolf for more details.
This brings the end to our winter season, and we can all look forward to good golfing weather and course conditions in the coming months.
See you all at Cape Schanck.
NB: The GOC has decided to hold the annual AGM in November this year, as many members go on leave at the end of the year (Dec & Jan period). More details will be provided shortly.
Kind regards
Balwant Khosa (Capt VSAGC)

The long waited 'bus trip' to Cape Schanck Resort finally arrived and I am sure the guys enjoyed every minute of it! All players turned up on time and the score cards were distributed well before the 1st T off. The weather was excellent and everyone was in the mood to have a good hit.
There were two belated birthdays announced - Raj Chaal and Dr Anmol Bassi - always looking younger and what a way to celebrate - playing golf on an excellent course. All in all 36 players participated, of which there were 7 guests and 29 regular members. 9 flights - all using carts, as the course is very hilly - 1st flight teed off at 10.52. There was a good distribution of low and high handicappers in all flights, although I had to meet lots of requests - players wanted to pair up with their mates.
The sponsors for this comp were MPA Accountants Ltd, Mr Kerpal Marne and his partner, Sony Deo. Thank you very much and we look forward to see you again next year.
The course was new to 90% of the players and most of us did not find the bearing until 4th or the 5th hole! The 1st hole devoured quite a number of balls - from my flight all of us had to take a provisional! Because of the hills, the greens were not visible from the tee-off points and it became a little harder to see and aim - not that we were bloody straight hitters!! Thank God for the carts - otherwise the seniors like me would have been buggered. Also the greens were big and undulating - making it difficult for the players to find the hole with one or two puts. Hence the scores kept going up and up!
There were only 2 NTPs chosen, out of the 5 par 3s on the course. I divided the players into 3 groups - so that more players will have a chance to win a NTP prize. Similarly the longest drive was also grouped according to the high and low handicaps. Please refer to the results below. The longest drive for group A (h/c of 0-22) was in doubt and fortunately the club pro clarified - the boundaries for the fairway. This par 5 was not a straight hole that most of us are used to - it did take some skill to land the ball on the fairway. Again, quite a number of players sacrificed their balls to the unforgiving forest on the right.
Initially some of the players were complaining that the use of carts for all was not a good idea as it did not allow them to warm their bodies. Yes the wind was a little chilly in the morning. There were no restrictions - players could have opted to walk. I enjoyed the cart ride!
The 7th hole was closed for repairs. It was replaced by a temporary hole (par 3) after the 11th hole. This hole was only 85 meters to the pin - but it did trick lot of players and only 10 players managed to make a par. Looked easy from the hill but choice of the right iron and stroke made the difference!
The "neatest card" for the tournament was won by Dr Anmol Bassi. Encouraging players to fill their score cards neatly is important - as it makes the recording, after the game, a little easier. It is nothing like struggling to read the cards after the game. Many of the cards were not signed. Total net scores were incorrectly printed on the cards and too much scribbling on the cards was noted - i.e. the player's score was printed on the marker's card and vice versa.
The 19th hole was celebrated at the club cafeteria - proudly sponsored by MPA Accountants Ltd. The Parma and chips were quite tasty after a long day. There were lots of gifts handed out - again kindly donated by the sponsors.
I would like to thank Amarjit Dhillon for helping me to write names on the cards in the morning. It was good to see the treasurer coming early, for a change, to collect the green fees.
Kind regards
Balwant Khosa (Capt VSAGC)

Being a Diwali Cup championship tournament, the day turned out to be perfect for golf. With couple of guys pulling out at the last moment - we still ended up with 7 flights, i.e. 25 players. Freeway is a fairly easy course compared to where we played last month. The course CCR (Calculated Course Rating) is 65. Please refer to this link.
All players reported on time and the first flight rolled out at 08:50 hrs. Players were again reminded to fill in their cards correctly - and guess what - 95% of the cards were correctly marked and signed. They were neat as well! Still there are some members who can't be bothered to sign or enter their scores correctly. I hope this will change in the near future. It was nice to see some old timers back in action - Amarjit Dhillon (Ambe) came back after nearly a year's absence and of course Piara Singh also managed to find time to participate. Welcome back to both the players.
Most players did play very well and of course the low handicappers managed to win the championship trophies. David Gyi - as usual displayed a remarkable skill. He managed 2 birdies and 10 pars - scoring 3 under his handicap of 12! Well done David. The other good performer in the 'B' grade was Ricky Gill with a net of 76 - his best effort so far. Well done and keep it up Ricky. With the absence of Keat Lim I managed to win the longest drive and the the 'B' grade was taken by Ben Tan. The NTPs - Rashpal Chaggar won the 'A' group followed by Charn Singh winning the 'B' group.
Due to the rearrangement of holes on the course, some players found it hard to navigate themselves. I think they eventually managed to complete the course. Few members were questioning the accuracy of their handicap, before the play started. They were assured that their handicaps will be verified after the game. For this reason I am publishing the handicaps of all financially current members who participate regularly.
The 19th hole was celebrated at the club ground and the food was collected from Ampang Tofu, in High Street- Doncaster. The Nasi Lemak was tasty and I am sure the players enjoyed with cold beers supplied by our regular 'daruwalla' - Sardar Puran Singh. Puran has done a great job - supplying cold beers - over the years. Your efforts are much appreciated Puran. I thank the volunteers - Chanchal and Siva for picking up the food.
The prizes and food for today were donated by our regular Diwali sponsorer - Sardar Rashpal Chaggar. The club thanks Rashpal for his ongoing support. In addition to this as outgoing captain I donated some gifts to very special deserving members. David Gyi was chosen as the best player for year 2010. Further details are below.
After the prizes the AGM started on time at 3:30pm. With all the rigmarole completed - the Chair person called for the election of the new committee for year 2011. The existing committee did a fantastic job in running the club's affairs from month to month. Without naming the individuals - the GOC introduced new method of reporting - via a website - designed and donated by Ranjeet Chaal (secretary). The Captain reintroduced the 'A' and 'B' grade for the players. This gave high handicappers to win the prizes as well. The existing GOC also treated the players to some excellent food in restaurants over the months. There were no BBQs held - as the weather this year was not conducive for outdoor catering. The quality of prizes improved. There was more variety - every month. The GOC managed to run the club within the budget for year 2010.
On personal note I enjoyed my term as a captain for 2010. I like to thank each and every one for their corporation and help when needed. I wish best of luck for the new GOC for year 2011. We are a small social club and it is run on a volunteer basis. I hope the members do realise that whoever is elected to perform the task in the GOC should be given all the help they need to run the club for coming years. Everyone has to contribute to make the survival of this club viable.
